Elderberry Syrup

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup dried elderberries
  • 4 cups (950 mL) water
  • 1-2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger root
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon black seed (optional)
  • 1 cup honey preferably raw

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients EXCEPT the honey. We need to add the honey at the end because the heat will destroy many of its beneficial properties.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour. The liquid will reduce.
  • Remove from heat and let cool until warm to the touch. Strain the syrup.
  • Add the honey and mix well until completely dissolved.
  • Store in the refrigerator in a clean glass jar. This will last for several months in the refrigerator.

Notes

I buy the elderberries here. This bag contains enough elderberries to make almost 7 1/2 batches of syrup.
